Last night I had a strange dream - about time travel and relativity

Every so often my brain actually tries to solve problems interactively with me while I sleep. Its very useful because when I wake up, I have new insight to a problem though it may take me a while sometimes to actually figure it out. I've actually had dreams about products to build and such - a few of them that actually became reality, and a few of them which I'm watching become reality almost a decade later.

Anyways onto the dream. In the dream I lived in a world where I or someone else (wasn't clear) had created a device where a person could travel backward through time. I don't recall anyone actually trying to go forwards in time during the dream. I did manage to try the device for myself, though I am unsure how I managed to get my hands on one, and go backwards in time. I found that I could go back to any point, but for some reason I wasn't able to go back to far - or at least I wasn't interested in doing so. It seemed that it was possible for me to go back to a point and change what I knew should happen. I did this on my occasion of time travel, but when I blinked back to the 'present' it seemed that nothing had transpired. For a long time I have held a hypothesis that if one could travel backwards through time, the process would be almost like spawning a new thread in a program or in a more simpler description - making a copy paste of the universe in some process and performing changes on that separate copy of the universe.... and then living in that universe. But through some process (dream unclear now) I was able to determine that the process didn't create a new copy. I remember myself in front of some very complicated math equations on a white board that proved it.

I then went back in time and made another change, but this time I didn't return to the present - I decided to catch up with the present. If I recall correctly, in this iteration I killed a lab rat - or something. Perhaps it wasn't a rat, I was somewhat disturbed at having to do it I recall. Nevertheless I waited and at time swapped over from my 'altered' past to the 'known' past, something curious happened - the object was alive again. Going back to the past, the object was still dead. This was towards the end of the dream so maybe my brain has a few new chapters in store for me tonight. What I remember thinking towards the end of the dream and as I was waking up was the thought that the universe has a “play head” at which time is created - we live it, and the play head moves on. In the dream it seemed that all time travel backwards through time did was allow you to change the “frames of time” up to the point that you separated from it - like taking an old VHS and sullying part of it with a marker. While the part you disturbed would have evidence of your tampering, as soon as you passed it - everything would be fine.

Yeah its strange.
