What's even worse that the absurd nature of the legislation is that it includes criminal penalties - fines and up to two years in prison.
Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both. How could we get to the point where not only would this foolishness make it through Congress, but the president of the United States - leader of the "free" world would sign such legislation which has such obvious and dangerout impact to the freedom and liberty of the Internet and free speech in general?
What the hell is going on in America when our representative government, many of them educated in law, would even think that such language would make sense given today's heavily lawsuit happy society.
Who decides if something is annoying? If the White House posts something online and don't reveal their exact source, can I sue them as well? Is this some over reaction to whistle blowers in order to make it a criminal action for them to communicate electronically?
How could it have come to this?
