Mobile phone companies join forces on Linux | CNET News.com
It seems that Motorola, NEC, Panasonic, and Samsung want to actually work together and build a phone OS platform based on Linux. My first question is - what the hell took so long? My second question is what it will actually entail, and whether or not it will be 'hackable'. Using Linux opens the door for leveraging a lot of preexisting stuff - so I hope that it happens in a "real" way and not just in the 'oh we have 2 handsets that run Linux, but we don't sell them in the US' as is often the case when these companies actually do produce cool stuff.
