Lately I have been liking Linux enough to stomach some of its 'issues', but my latest experience with Skype renewed my hate of Linux all over again. All I wanted to do was do an internet call to another machine, something we tackled back in like the 80s and 90s on Windows - something that works flawlessly on a Mac. But I ended up spending considerable time hacking around with the alsamixer in Fedora Core 6, then messing around with Skype which kept turning off the capture microphone. It was all a very annoying process that consumed a lot of the time and patience that I have been reserving for this more annoying of operating systems.
Tomorrow when my internet connection expires, I will definitely renew it based on my Mac (the internet system discriminates machine by MAC address) so that I can skype with the joy that the software was designed to have and not the command line flip-switches plug and pray nightmare that is modern Linux. But hey, its GPL and free!
